LEGAL RECOGNITION OF MICRONATIONS AND UNRECOGNIZED STATES

____________________________________________________________________

In recent decades, micronations and self-proclaimed entities have emerged, claiming independence or sovereignty without international recognition. Cases such as Somaliland, Transnistria, or symbolic micronations question the UN’s criteria of statehood and legitimacy. The debate centers on the right to self-determination versus the territorial integrity of already recognized states. The UNGA is the forum where the possibility of granting them some form of legal recognition or representation is discussed, along with the political, legal, and diplomatic consequences.
